It’s been another hectic week in the world of XR, with plenty of exciting updates that prove the industry’s rapid growth shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Tech-giants Apple announced their partnership with TSMC, a world-leading developer of MicroLED displays for AR devices.

While the details of Apple’s upcoming AR smart glasses are (in proper Apple form) still shrouded in mystery, we all get the sense that something big is bubbling away beneath the surface.

Earlier this year, at CES 2021, Vuzix announced their plan to launch a revolutionary set of new MicroLED smart glasses in Q2 that will combine high functionality with a minimalist, lightweight design.

By working closely with TSMC, it’s safe to assume Apple will follow a similar strategy for their smart glasses when they eventually hit the market sometime soon.

Elsewhere, leading XR and VR hardware developer, Varjo, announced the next generation of its flagship headsets – the VR-3 and the XR-3.

In a fiercely competitive marketplace like VR & XR, it takes a lot for a vendor to generate such consistently high acclaim.

Yet, over the last 12 months, Varjo has done a fine job at carving a name for itself at the top of the stack as one of the world’s best developers of high-end enterprise-grade VR and XR technologies.

Building on that success, this latest generation of headsets will undoubtedly propel Varjo even further towards its goal of becoming the dominant market leader in the XR for enterprise space.

Other leading VR headset developers, Pico Interactive, also shared some exciting news this week regarding the completion of a $37.4M (€31.4M) B+ funding round for partners and customers.

The funding will present a huge opportunity for Pico to expand its volume of B2B partners in the western marketplace, and rapidly accelerate the pace of new product development outside of China.

Another exciting development we covered this week was how augmented reality could help combat the spread of coronavirus in both the enterprise and consumer worlds.

Michelle Quinn from VOA recently explored the possibilities of “floating buttons” for touch-screen interactions without physical contact.

This revolutionary technology will harness AR’s power to help people navigate through devices like tablets and smartphone screens without ever having to touch them.

Considering how drastically the general public’s concern towards health has risen over these last 12 months due to the pandemic, it easy to see how touchless technologies could offer immense value across the spectrum in the years to come.

Finally, special thanks to Jeremy Dalton, Head of XR at PwC UK and Author for joining us on XR Today this week for an exclusive interview.

As one of the leading voices in the XR for enterprise space, it was fantastic to hear his thoughts on how the marketplace is evolving and learn about his predictions on what is coming in the months and years ahead.
