Apple Inc has once again filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for “Air Deflectors for Cooling System in a Head-Mounted Device”.

The patent application abstract explains how a housing will surround a head mounted device such as a virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) headset.

The housing contains an inlet and outlet path that regulates air flow that keeps users and their headset cool for long periods of time.

The design will reduce user discomfort over time, leading to increased feelings of immersion.

Overheating is a common issue with head mounted devices, Oculus enforce strict checks to avoid any such issue.

Keeping up with Apple Patents and Updates

Ever since the news that Apple Inc are developing a mixed reality (MR) headset, the Cupertino-based firm has been producing patents left and right.

According to BloomBerg, Apple’s MR headset is planned to be announced at the end of 2021 and new patents are teasing fans.

Earlier this month, Apple filled a patent for a biometric display that improves eye and facial tracking.

Apple is also helping budding AR developers by consistently updating Reality Kit 2, a software development kit (SDK) which makes AR content creation faster and easier.

Apple’s recent series of patents aim to increase the immersive experience by answering technical problems.

AR ambitions are not isolated to upcoming hardware, Apple recently added AR integration to their Maps software.

As software advancements leak onto iPhone and iOS technology, we may see further merging of AR advancements to Apple’s smartphone line.
