Apple Inc has filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a head-mountable device allowing improved facial biometrics, reports revealed last week, citing Patently Apple.

The report found the newly-registered device will be installed to improve facial biometrics in products such as smart eyeglasses, allowing greater sensor alignment to record and monitor user biometrics.

According to the report, the additional kit is expected to exploit full use of the display element in Apple’s latest devices as well as monitor health and activity.

The upgrades will also boost eye, mood, voice, and emotion tracking as well as facial recognition, among others, providing expanded interactions between the headset and user biometrics.

Apple Updates, Upgrades, and Upcoming Events

The news comes after the Cupertino-based firm filed a further patent in late May for a bright and low light functioning AR display for its new headsets, which aim to increase the accuracy of computer-generated reality (CGR) objects.

Bloomberg reported in April Apple would launch a new mixed reality (MR) headset by the end of 2021, just a day after the confirming its Worldwide Developer Conference would take place June 7 to 11.

The US tech giant is expected to launch its MR headset by mid-2022, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo told Bloomberg at the time.

According to Kuo, Apple had developed a three-phase “MR/AR roadmap” which aimed to produce a helmet type headset by 2022, smart glasses by 2025, and contact lenses by 2030 to 2040.
