According to Bloomberg, Apple is planning to announce its highly anticipated mixed-reality headset by the end of this year at an event that will presumably be open to select media and industry partners.

The news comes only a day after Apple confirmed its Worldwide Developer Conference would be held virtually June 7 through 11, for the second year in a row. The tech giant is clearly content with unveiling its updated operating systems via livestream. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says that the same approach won’t work so good for its headset.

“Sometime in the next several months, the company is poised to announce a mixed reality headset, its first major new device since 2015. If possible, Apple won’t want to make such a critical announcement at an online event. It wants employees, the media, its partners and developers in the room.”

The best and only way to experience mixed reality is to physically put on a headset, so demoing the new Apple device during a livestream wouldn’t do it justice. It’s understandable that Apple would want to give a 360° experience even with the ongoing pandemic.

Rumour has it that the headset will have dual-curved 8k displays with swappable visors, with over a dozen external camera to track hand movements. It’s also said to include technology that allows for both augmented and virtual reality experiences, as its names suggest.

Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the headset will also be portable, without unnecessary wires, according to MacRumors. Thanks to its own onboard computing power and storage, the experience of this headset would be similar to Facebook’s standalone Oculus Quest 2 which doesn’t require a PC or laptop tethering. However, Kuo predicts that Apple’s mixed headsets won’t be available until 2022.
