US virtual reality (VR) headset maker Valve recently took second place on Steam’s list of most used headsets just two years after the launch of Valve Index, UploadVR reported on Wednesday.
The $1,000 headset earned a 17.5 percent share of VR headset users on Steam, up 1.5 percent from September, data from the Steam index revealed.
Facebook’s discontinued Oculus Rift S also dropped to third place by a narrow 0.88 percent margin, or 17.21 percent share.
The news comes after Valve reported a drop in overall VR headset usage in September, with the Oculus facing an 0.42 percent fall compared to August, just after the Menlo Park-based firm released its 128GB version of the Quest 2, which was expected to rise in usage but instead saw a 1.74 percent decline at the time.
Valve’s Index usage also lowered 0.24 percent along with recorded decreases among HTC VIVE, Pico Neo and Oculus Rift headsets, XR Today reported in early September.
The developments also come just days after news reports revealed Valve planned to release a standalone VR headset ‘Deckard’ to compete with Facebook’s Oculus Quest 2.
Numerous tech giants have begun releasing or developing headsets to compete in the rapidly growing XR hardware market, with HTC VIVE, Apple, Oculus, DPVR, and Lynx unveiling new models, both standalone and tethered, to compete for market shares in the tech industry.
