This Monday, major pharma firm Roche announced that virtual reality (VR) cognitive training developers Virtuleap are joining its lineup of start-ups creating immersive solutions to battle Alzheimers and Dementia.

Virtuleap is joining Roche’s ‘Building Together Tomorrow’ program to improve the quality of life of individuals with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Amir Bozorgzadeh, the Chief Executive Officer of Virtuleap, said:

VR literally tricks the autonomic nervous system, vestibular balance system, and our proprioception into perceiving the simulated realities as authentic, which enables a range of therapeutic use cases to arise in which an immersive solution can serve either as a companion tool that pair with pharma treatments, or otherwise serves as a standalone digital therapeutic in its own right.

Healthcare experts at Lusíadas institutions, a group of Roche partner hospitals, will conduct a 5-month clinical trial on Virtuleap’s product. Healthcare professionals will integrate Virtuleap’s Enhance VR library into wellness procedures, which offers 15 cognitive VR training applications for patients.

Virtuleap’s ability to provide at-home immersive training is essential for the Roche partnership.

Roche is conducting tests with Remote Control by Virtuleap, a telehealth feature which improves remote communication between at-home patients and dispersed careers. The feature also allows users to operate the service with their smartphone, tablet, or desktop.

Additionally, Amir added:

The Remote Control tool allows for real-time remote navigation while our Survey Engine enables questionnaires to be run pre and post sessions.

Virtuleap combines VR immersive technology features with neuroscientific research to address various cognitive disorders, such as traumatic brain injuries, ADHD, and dementia.

Virtuleap’s Enhance VR library of immersive games targets brain functions like memory and motor control. Leading Neurosciecents designed the training library to best suit healthcare and wellness use cases.

According to Amir in an interview with XR Today, the immersive training platform is “agnostic” to use cases, meaning the platform suits many vertical markets and purposes.

Amir added, “we’ve created a very sophisticated enterprise tool that our organisational partners use for clinical studies or training purposes.”

Similarly, immersive wellness firm Rendever is battling Dementia by employing VR to help physical and mental wellbeing in senior living communities.

The firm provides elderly living groups with physical fitness games like RendevorFit that connects seniors with immersive fitness classes.

Rendever also offers Multi-Brush, a 360 degree VR canvas made to motivate movement and introduce artistic therapeutics to seniors.
