Varjo has released the ‘world’s first’ ultra high-resolution 3D scanning solution called Teleport.

The global leader in industrial-grade virtual and mixed reality hardware and software, Varjo, has announced the general availability of Teleport, which creates photorealistic digital twins by stitching together 3D scenes made from Apple smartphone photos.

Teleport has just completed a closed beta testing period in which Varjo collaborated with roughly 2,000 professionals and businesses to improve the solution.

Beta testers were reportedly able to capture surroundings within five to ten minutes of scanning, as opposed to the hours and days required for traditional photogrammetry workflows.

Patrick Wyatt, Chief Product Officer at Varjo, outlined the impact that Teleport could have within the industry: “Today, we are proud to release Teleport, the most visually impressive 3D scanning solution publicly available, and the only one able to bring digital twins directly into virtual reality.

“This service will change the way professionals work, making it easier than ever to capture, share, and analyse real-world places.”

‘Teleport’ Yourself

The Teleport application is powered by generative models trained on NVIDIA GPUs.

After converting mobile phone photos into 3D representations of a specific place, it can be experience either on a phone, PC, or in full virtual reality uses a VR headset.

According to Varjo, this service “radically reduces” both the time and complexity of digitising real-world locations compared to other solutions.

Specifically, Teleport can provide 3D scanning workflows for professionals working within design, remote inspection, construction, and training.

Varjo has also added to its most recent round of funding with new investors NVIDIA, Nishikawa Communications, and Beyond Capital.

With this funding, Varjo plans to increase CR hardware and software adoption n industrial settings using solutions that can increase creativity, productivity, and efficiency.

The company will also continue developing products and services to further integrate reality with virtual reality, using the latest AI and machine learning technologies. It says it is ultimately working towards a point at which the two become “indistinguishable”.

Varjo claims that its technologies are much more powerful than mobile chips and it is a transformative tool for enterprises.

In fact, 19 out of 20 of the world’s biggest defence and aerospace companies are apparently using Varjo’s solutions.

Timo Toikkanen, Varjo CEO, gave a succinct summary of Teleport’s capabilities:

“On NVIDIA’s accelerated computing platform, we can push the boundaries of what’s possible in immersive technology, delivering unparalleled experiences for the most demanding industrial users as they bring their workflows into virtual environments.”

The Build Up

Teleport was debuted in June this year, at which time it was in an early access period.

Later that month, XR Today reviewed the 3D scanning solution, including an assessment of its ease of use and the overall experience, the benefits, quick tips, and more.

It points out that while Apple offers a spatial recording solution for the Apple Vision Pro, Teleport is likely to be a more accessible (and affordable) option for many users experimenting with XR content creation.

In November 2023, Varjo officially announced its latest enterprise-grade MR headset portfolio: the XR-4. The device portfolio includes the XR-4, XR-4 Focal Edition, and XR-4 Secure Edition, three MR headsets designed to cater to various end-users from aviation to government to defence.
