Meta, Inc released its third-quarter (Q3) earnings report that revealed, among other things, the firm had sold over a million Quest 2 virtual reality (VR) headsets, reports revealed.

A report from AR Insider estimated the recently-rebranded US tech giant sold roughly 1.38 million units, based upon Q3 revenue figures that revealed Meta made $506 million from hardware revenue.

Researchers at AR Insider estimate Quest 2 sales make up 90 percent of the firm’s hardware revenue, meaning Meta sold 1.38 million Quest 2 units in Q3 at $329 per unit.

In the same Q3 report, Meta announced VR ad revenues had reached $28 billion USD, prompting Meta to track Reality Labs’ earnings and invest up to $10 billion USD into the research division.

The developments come after reports revealed Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 accounted for roughly 31 percent of headsets on Valve Corporation’s SteamVR platform.

Additionally, a Steam Hardware and Software Survey published in June showed that Quest 2 headset usage had increased by 0.95 percent on Steam.

Data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) earlier this year also revealed global shipments of Quest 2 headsets had increased by 52.4 percent year-on-year in 2021’s first fiscal quarter.

Meta’s continued success with VR led to its recent rebranding from Facebook to reflect the firm’s desire to create extended reality (XR) social experiences and a global Metaverse platform.

A Year of Quest 2

During last week’ss Facebook Connect event, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO and Founder, unveiled Project Cambria and Project Nazare, a pair of wearables designed for Meta’s new vision for online communication.

Just days before Facebook Connect 2021, videos leaked on Twitter allegedly revealed official Oculus Quest Pro designs and user tutorials.

Meta did not confirm the leaks or unveil the Quest Pro at the event, but audiences instead saw Cambria and Nazare head-mounted displays.

These developments follow a year of scandals for the popular Quest headset, namely after the European Commission (EC) issued a chemical alert after customers reported numerous skin rash complaints.

A number of leaks from French and Chinese online retailers also listed the 128GB Quest 2 model ahead of its official launch, sparking anticipation on social media.
