Pimax has launched the ‘world’s first’ retina-level VR headset, which it says can provide users with “unmatched clarity”.

Describing itself as a global leader in VR technology, Pimax has released a series of updates and product announcements at its Pimax Sync keynote.

As well as the releasing details of the final specs and exterior design relating to the Crystal Super, it has also revealed Pimax Prime, a new membership program to make VR more accessible:

Martin Lammi, European Marketing Director of Pimax Technology, VR enthusiast & VR YouTuber, explained during the keynote why the Crystal Super has been the company’s best-seller yet:

“The crystal light: the more affordable and trimmed down version of the crystal is the best-selling Pimax VR headset so far.

“Why? Because it has 17 million pixels with a refresh rate of 120HZ even at native resolution.

“It has glass aspheric lenses and a Display Port Cable so that the visuals from the PC get delivered without visual compression.

Continued: “It is a favourite among titles such as simulator games or for anyone who values the highest clarity of consumer VR.

“It has a good field of view, details look incredible, the colours are bright and the headset is lightweight and comfortable.”

Crystal Super Features

The Crystal Super has now become Pimax’s latest flagship VR headset, with its breakthrough retina-level resolution of 57 PPD.

Other features of the Crystal Super include QLED panels with 3840 x 3840 pixels per eye, 120-degree horizontal field of view and glass aspheric lenses with 99 percent light transmission and a brightness of 280 Nits.

Local Dimming 2.0 and 100 local dimming zones per eye enable  the contrasts and blacks to be close  to  micro-OLED levels.

Eye-tracking and inside-out tracking is also available and controllers are included.

Pimax Play has a number of further features too like Dynamic Forveated Rendering and Upscaling.

There are changeable optical engines, such as Micros-OLED and 50 PPD QLED options.

The exterior has been scaled down by nearly 30 percent in size and has been designed to provide comfort for long sessions.

Anti-aliasing can be reduced due to the Crystal Super’s pixel density, which releases important system resources while supporting high quality images.

Finally, the device offers professional-level PCVR to enable a brighter display, enhance the field of view, and improve ergonomics and comfort.

The Crystal Super is currently on sale for $1605, which comprises a base price of $999 and a one-time payment of $696.

Shipments of the Crystal Super are due to begin in Q1 2025, with the Micro-OLED and 50 PPD QLED engine becoming available for pre-order at the same time.

Pimax Prime Membership

Pimax Prime includes flexible payment options, additional services, and new hardware and software features like early access to new software, invitations to member-only events, priority technical support, flexible returns, and flexible payment options.

Lammi shared that accessibility to the technology was one of its main goals: “Digital Trends gave it nine out of ten with an editor’s choice award. It was used at the official media event for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and Optimum said it’s his favourite VR headset for simracing.

“It has been added to the crystal family with the aim of making high-end VR accessible to everyone.

“Throughout this year we’ve been steadily improving stability and quality control. It is really in a superb place right now.”

With the Pimax Prime membership, the Pimax Crystal Light can be purchased for a $300 discount of $599 or as part of a 24-month contract.
