The Beijing-based company released the news via its official Weibo account yesterday, saying that the headset launch event will be taking place on May 10 at the Beijing National Aquatics Center, also known as ‘Water Cube’.

According to Chinese VR publication Yivian, the standalone headset has four optical sensors and a new Oculus-like Touch Controller.

At the end of last month, the company announced it was opening its own publishing division called Pico Studios. The company has plans to partner will global developers to bring its 6DOF VR apps and games to customers in Asia. There are already around 400 apps in the Pico Store, which include a few fan favourites localised for Chinese consumers, namely Superhot VR, Apex Construct, Angry Birds BR: Isle of Pigs and Racket: Nx.

As for the Western market, Pico is still focusing on serving enterprise clients and B2B with Neo 3, due to the still small number of companies interested, to compete with the successful Oculus Quest/Quest 2 platform developed by Facebook.

Nevertheless, Pico is at an advantage in Asia, as China-based consumers are not allowed to purchased Oculus devices because of the Facebook ban. Pico Interactive has received a B and B+ funding round of about $67M, therefore it’s too early to speculate which paths Pico will go outside of the Asia market.
