Pico may be one of the lesser known names in VR right now, but the company is quickly gaining steam with a selection of impressive, and affordable headsets. As part of CES 2019, Pico launched their first VR headset with a 4K display and all-in-one functionality.

The Pico G2 4K is a headset intended for comprehensive business applications, as well as virtual reality gaming. You can use this device in “kiosk mode”, with handsfree controls, and there’s a hygienic design with replaceable inserts.

This device performs well in a range of areas, from processing power, to image quality and ease of use. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at what’s possible with this headset.

Pico G2 Review: Design and build

The Pico G2 4K takes all of the high-performance focus of the previous versions of Pico’s devices, and transforms it into a device providing maximum comfort and exceptionally crisp 4K.

Similar to most VR headsets available today, the Pico G2 does feel a little chunky on first inspection, but it lacks the annoying wires and cables that keep you tethered to the real world when you’re trying to explore virtual reality. Another bonus is the presence of replaceable PU face inserts that are hygienic, and easy to clean.

There’s an incorporated battery which lasts for around 2.5 hours on a full charge, and the battery itself sits in the head strap, which helps to balance the weight and stop you from feeling too weighed down on the front. The controller is ergonomic and fits well in your hand, and there are volume controls on both the controller and the headset, so you can easily adjust your sound.

For audio, the stereo speakers don’t face towards the ears like they would in Oculus alternatives, but seem to point downwards instead, which is an odd choice. The controller handsets are also an optional part of the experience, so you can experiment with how you prefer to use your device.

Pico G2 Review: Ease of Use

The Pico G2 4K headset is designed to be a unique experience that’s easy to access whether you’re a consumer, or an enterprise user. You can start using the system immediately without an extra account, and you can choose to use the headset without controllers, so it’s easy to dive in if you don’t want to set up controller functionality.

Unlike other VR headsets, you don’t have to calibrate the device whenever you use it, which means that you can simply prepare the headset and give it to different people at an event or showcase.

From an operational perspective, the navigation and menu of the Pico G2 is on par with what you would expect from similar headsets like the Oculus Go. There’s an Android OS which makes this headset more appealing to developers, and a custom layer from Pico also runs on top of that system. You can also use the software developer kits currently available for Unreal Engine and Unity to develop your own content too.

Pico G2 Review: Image quality and performance

Image quality is probably the biggest selling point of the Pico G2 4K headset. The company wanted to create something that offered grab-and-go simplicity, without compromising on the overall immersion. The 4K LCD screen definitely contributes to that. A 3840 x 2160 screen resolution makes experiencing the content on your Pico system truly breathtaking.

This is the first headset in its category to offer an all-in-one functionality combined with a 4K screen, and that really does help it to stand out. Aside from a 4K resolution, you also get a strong field of view and a refresh rate of around 75hz. There’s also a PPI of 818 for a brighter and clearer quality of image at all times.

The overall image quality definitely drives a better experience when you’re moving through virtual worlds, and combined with the powerful processor, you get a great all-around immersion.

Pico G2 Review: Verdict

Intended for both work and play, the Pico G2 is one of the few headsets in its category that can deliver an excellent quality of image, combined with a fantastic grab-and-go functionality. The ease of use and the high resolution of this headset come together to make Pico well worth the extra attention and effort if you’re looking for business tools.

For onboarding, training, events, and demos, the Pico G2 4K could be the ideal choice.
