Comfort is one of the main issues that vendors face when constructing devices for extended reality experiences. The most immersive VR and AR headsets often require a lot of complicated technology, combined to create an excellent overall experience. Unfortunately, this usually means that headsets are bulky, uncomfortable, and challenging to use for extended periods.

Although we’ve come a long way from the clunky and weighty headsets that emerged during the initial days of VR and XR experimentation, many headsets still have their issues. As companies experiment with ways to make the technology more lightweight and seamless, they need to collect their audience’s feedback for essential insights.

Oculus, one of the foremost innovators in VR technology, received reports recently of skin irritation and discomfort for around 0.01% of the people using the Quest 2 headset. According to the team, the irritation occurs when the Quest 2 headset’s foam rests against the face. Although most of the irritation cases reported were mild, Oculus announced that it would be taking action anyway.

Responding to Customer Concerns

Contrary to popular belief, Oculus claims the irritation is unlikely to be caused by allergies or severe medical conditions, and most people experiencing the issue will find that it goes away on its own.

However, Oculus felt it was important to share information about the irritation to protect their users. According to the team, standard headgear such as ski goggles, motorcycle helmets, and VR headsets can sometimes cause skin irritation occasionally. Sometimes, this irritation comes from the substances introduced in the manufacturing process. Other times, the issue is a result of reactions between materials and skincare products.

Oculus conducted an in-depth investigation to pinpoint any potential causes of the irritation and has since made changes to the manufacturing process as a result.

Making VR More Comfortable

Oculus noted that any customers that had experienced skin irritation where the Quest 2 had been resting against their face should contact the Support team. The irritation is different from the usual pressure marks that some people see after wearing a headset for an extended period.

Oculus says that it is developing a new program for customers that provides a replacement interface for anyone who has been affected. Oculus will make an announcement on its website when the new program is available.
