Facebook’s Oculus Quest system software will receive an update allowing users to expand virtual reality (VR) play spaces up to 15 metres in all directions, UploadVR reported this week.

According to the findings, Facebook’s V30 Quest system software will provide up to 15 metres of space—up 10 metres from the previous iteration—totalling 2,400 square feet.

A Facebook spokesperson said as cited by the report: “We expect this to benefit a variety of apps that require more space and movement in VR.”

The Quest 2 uses Oculus’ Insight vision system, where users can note furniture in the playing space and warn when players objects are too close, as well as switch gameplay from seated to standing.

The news comes after Facebook revealed new additions to its VR platform, including an arena-style mixed reality gaming experience, in 2018.

The news comes amid further tweaks for the Quest 2, including the system’s Air Link update released with software v28 version in early May, which allows Quest 2 users to play VR games wirelessly between headsets linked with strong WiFi connections.

According to Andrew Bosworth, Facebook Reality Labs Head, the feature was launched earlier than initially scheduled as the developments were very exciting.

The Quest 2 is a major step for the US tech giant and is priced at $299 for a massive upgrade in features, including a 33 percent increase in memory to 6GB RAM and headset options with 256GB storage space.

The headset also uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 platform, with twice the performance of its predecessor, leading to advanced image rendering and gameplay along with 5G capabilities.
