While HTC Vive may have fallen out of favor in the virtual reality marketplace of late, a recent Tweet from the tech-giants tells us something big could be coming through the pipeline soon.

Though there has been no official confirmation, the company recently Tweeted an extreme close-up image of a plastic surface with HTC Vive branding layered over the top of it, accompanied by an enigmatic caption stating, “It’s your move.”

To whom the company is challenging with this caption remains unclear, but we’ve long suspected Vive has been working on a new standalone VR headset to compete with the Oculus Quest 2 in 2021 and beyond.

Earlier this yearChris Guerin, CEO at Xpllore, predicted that HTC VIVE would potentially try to carve itself a place somewhere in the mid-market, and this release could mark the start of that strategical push.

What can we expect from HTC Vive?

Right now, we can only speculate as to what the company will bring to the table with its new device, but we know it’ll have to deliver something much better (and perhaps far less expensive) than its previous offering.

As the popularity of the Oculus Quest 2 continues to spread, breaking Facebook’s quarterly seasonal sales records along the way, Vive will have to produce something spectacular that can compete on both function and price – but is it possible?

Oculus has been so successful because it did what many other companies were unable to do: offer a superior product at a price that none of its nearest competitors could match.

Considering the dominance of Oculus, it’ll be interesting to see what strategy HTC Vive takes in the road ahead, and XR Today will be here reporting on the latest developments every step of the way.
