Netflix has released its first virtual reality (VR) game for the Oculus Quest, global tech media reported this week.

The popular content streaming platform’s ‘Eden Unearthed’ has become available on the Oculus App Lab as it has not received a full review from Oculus and may still be in its experimental phase.

The game segues from the platform’s Eden anime series, where a young girl searches for other humans in a world of robots, and features a narrative-style game with motorbike racing to collect items.

Neflix’s Venture Into Virtual

The release comes amid rumours Netflix plans to enter the game streaming market along with rivals Valve, and comes as the firm strengthens ties with Facebook’s Oculus, namely after hiring Mike Verdu, ex-Oculus President of VR/AR Content, ahead of its plans to take on the VR game streaming market.

The company also released ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ — its first gaming title — which hit TVs before Telltale Games shuttered its doors in 2019, despite proposing a Stranger Things gaming title.

It was also revealed Netflix would enter the race to build the Metaverse after it inked a deal with the prolific producer Shonda Rhimes, who was tasked with creating hit TV dramas such as Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Bridgerton, among others.

Rhimes would “exclusively produce, stream and distribute feature films as well potential gaming and VR content” for the Netflix agreement, it was reported at the time.
