Initially announced in May, European vendors of photogrammetry equipment Mosiac is taking pre-orders for its “X” line up of 360-degree cameras.

Mosaic X is a mobile device that enables users to capture real-world environments as 360-degree immersive environments, photos, or videos.

360 photographers can use the hardware to create real-time 3D (RT3D) digital twins of locations. Users can view and edit their captured data in graphics engines such as Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.

Inside an RT3D graphics engine, an immersive content creator can edit the lighting of a scene, add visual effects, and place avatars.

Many firms are adopting photogrammetry for a range of use cases, with companies such as RUAS and Optelos employing Lidar-powered surveying technologies to provide rich RT3D data of physical locations.

‘Unpacking’ Mosaic X

Mosaic designed its latest solution as a massive upgrade from the firm’s impressive Mosaic 51 photogrammetry solution.

Jeffrey Martin, CEO at Mosaic, said in an interview,

“The Mosaic 51 is very good, don’t get me wrong – much better than any other 360 degree mobile mapping camera on the market. But the Mosaic X produces extraordinarily sharp images that surpassed our expectations”

Mosaic X manages 13k resolutions for capturing environments and utilising sub-millisecond synchronization, distance-based triggering, and accurate external sensors to create photorealistic recreations of a location.

Mosaic X hardware does not incorporate popular Lidar scanning technology used in several extended reality (XR) drone and capture solutions to create a cheaper solution for brands and businesses.

Martin added,

“Many companies have primarily used Lidar technology for point cloud creation and are looking for cheaper, easier-to-manage solutions”

New Tools for a Range of Industries

Mosaic’s hardware allows content creators to design immersive gaming, training, and film production environments, and its platform enables creators to develop virtual reality (VR) worlds without requiring a deep knowledge of graphic design or coding.

The CEO added,

“There have been many inquiries from companies currently employing outdated systems that are looking to upgrade to a device that offers improved clarity in the image quality, something these systems have long lagged on”

Additionally, Mosaic X provides 3D mapping and surveying industries with an affordable tool that integrates powerful photogrammetry into the easy-to-adopt mobile device. Mosaic’s website also outlines how industries such as architecture, engineering and construction, asset management, and real estate can adopt its latest device to create large-scale 3D assets to support industry 4.0 ambitions.
