Avatar Dimension has opened a groundbreaking holographic capture studio designed to create Volumetric Video (VV) for immersive virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences.

The US studio is one of only seven official Microsoft mixed reality (MR) capture studios in the world.

Volumetric capture creates high-fidelity 3D renders of a location, object, or person for use in enterprise training.

The VV studio is located in Sabey Company’s data centre in Ashburn, Virginia and capitalises on the facility’s massive on-site computing power.

The site also contains a 4,000 square foot VV capture studio, including a stage, green room, client area, and offices, and uses a total of 70 12-megapixel volumetric cameras to instantly create 3D renders, offering a streamlined way for developers to capture fully animated digital twins for VR/AR experiences.

Volumetric Capture for Enterprise

Despite being in its pre-operational phase, Avatar Dimensions are captivating the eyes and imagination of worldwide enterprises.

The United States Air Force (USAF) choose the service to create an immersive presentation of the “2020 Air Force Global Futures Report.”

The Avatar Dimension has also provided renders for many immersive presentations and tours, with Center of Creative Arts (COCA) holding virtual web tours using its capture service.

Visitors can experience the firm’s immersive tours online or by taking a tour of the Ashburn data centre.

Steve Sullivan, General Manager of Microsoft Mixed Reality Capture Studios explained at a recent event it was important to explore VV as a new medium for creatives to engage with, adding:

“Content creators are increasingly engaging volumetric video as a new medium to bring viewers more immersive, connected human experiences”

In a recent video published by Avatar Dimension, it was shown that even in pre-operational phases, enterprise usage is in focus.

It is still too early to determine the processing power needed to producing and editing volumetric capture files, which require specialist support. But companies such as Avatar Dimensions and Arcturus bring the technology closer to everyday application.

Sullivan added producing accessible, affordable, and high-quality holograms was important “to fuel the growth of mixed reality.”
