Huawei Technologies has revealed news of an upcoming virtual reality (VR) headset, media reported this week.

Speaking at the Huawei Full Scenario Smart Life Conference, the Chinese tech giant said as quoted by Huawei Central it would launch its VR Glass 6 degrees-of-freedom (DoF) game headset, which weighs only 188 grammes and can connect to Huawei smartphones and PCs with a Type-C cable.

The unit includes a headset module, controllers, cooling clip for mobiles, and 6 DoF modules capable of detecting head movements as well as jumping and crouching, the report said.

Huawei is expected to price the unit with kit at $626 USD (3,999 CNY) and headset-only option for $313 USD (1,999 Yuan)

Additional Features

The device is likely to have similar specifications as its first-generational version, which included two 2.1 inch LCD displays with a combined screen resolution of 3200 x 1600 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate, and dual diopter dials to fit prescription glasses, Gizchina reported.

The report added the Shenzhen-based firm initially launched the first version of the device in October last year, but failed to stock the latest kit on shelves, which XR Today believes was due to supply line disruptions in the ongoing US-China trade war.

Huawei’s VR Glass augmented reality (AR) smart glasses were also set to open for sale in April this year for roughly $470 USD, but ongoing concerns have delayed production of the kit indefinitely.

The product launch comes after the Chinese tech giant announced in July it had become a Premium Member of the Open 3D (O3DE) Foundation to develop 3D technologies for billions of its customers.

The O3DE works with the open-source Linux Foundation, and Huawei’s addition will allow the embattled tech giant to integrate its product lineup of mobiles, tablets, automotive, and VR Glass devices with crucial 3D content as the firm expands research and development over the coming years.
