US social media giant Facebook has released a major update to its Oculus Quest platform, the company announced on Friday.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Chief Executive and founder, told audiences in a Facebook post Oculus Quest v32 would offer major improvements for Oculus Move and sharing files to mobile devices.
He explained, stating:
“New Quest V32 update coming soon with Oculus Move improvements to help you track fitness goals in VR and share your stats on Facebook, Messenger, or in Groups (👋🏼 Supernatural Fitness Community). Also new tools to easily sync screenshots and screen recordings to your phone”
The announcment is a huge development as Facebook has typically used its SideQuest tool to transfer files such as videos, screenshots, and messages to PCs.
v32 will also improve Oculus Move, Facebook’s fitness tracker, allowing users to share their progress to Facebook and track exercise routine goals on Oculus devices.
While it is uncertain when Facebook will roll out the new update, the company is expected to release the changes within a month or two, ahead of its Facebook Connect event on 28 October.
The developments come just after Facebook announced a long-awaited planned release of a 128gb Oculus Quest 2 headset, following scandals which erupted after the European Union (EU) pulled the headsets from shelves due to illegal skin irritants found in the foam nose and face guards of devices.
Facebook also launched the beta version of its Horizon Workrooms app, which allows colleagues and teams to connect in virtual workspaces, share files, and interact with Oculus Avatars, among others.
The Menlo Park-based firm shocked headset users after it unveiled its Passthrough API Experimental in late July to deepen immersive and connected mixed reality (MR) experiences, where people could play interactive games and stream computer content using real environments and workspaces.
