Mike Schroepfer, Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer, announced on Wednesday he would resign from his post next year, sending ripples through the tech community.

The long-time executive of the world’s largest social media platform said in a recent blog post his position in the company would be taken over by Andrew Bosworth, Head of Reality Labs and Vice President of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), by 2022.

Mr Schroepfer’s 13-year-long career at Facebook will switch to a Senior Fellow role following the resignation.

Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive and Founder of Facebook, said in a blog post,

“As our next CTO, Boz will continue leading Facebook Reality Labs and overseeing our work in augmented reality, virtual reality and more, and as part of this transition a few other groups will join Boz’s team as well. This is all foundational to our broader efforts helping to build the metaverse, and I’m excited about the future of this work under Boz’s leadership”

Zuckerberg added Schroepfer’s role as a Senior Fellow would help Facebook attract and recruit technical talent and boost the company’s standing in artificial intelligence.

Schroepfer, or ‘Shrep’ according to colleagues, is one of several key figures in the company to step down after Fidji Simo, Head of Facebook’s Main App, and Carolyn Everson, Former Head of Global Ads.

The news comes as Facebook aims to shift to becoming a “Metaverse company”, Zuckerberg said in a bold interview with The Verge in early August. According to media reports, the Metaverse will become the next major computing platform and is widely seen as a successor to the internet.

Following Zuckerberg’s announcement, Bosworth posted he was actively recruiting for over 700 positions in the Menlo Park-based tech giant to build the firm’s new Metaverse division.
