UK specialist security provider Corps Security and British corporate training tech firm MoonHub have partnered on a virtual reality (VR) training solution for officers at two sites in London.

Corps Security was founded in 1859 as The Corps of Commissionaires Management Ltd by Cpt Sir Edward Walter to provide servicement returning from the Crimean war with employment.

Dozens of officers from the Royal Opera House and BNP Paribas are set to receive one of ten training modules to educate officers on managing suspicious packages, patrols, protests, combative people, and other situations, with additional courses set to take place the near future.

Each VR modules lasts roughly two to three minutes and simulates real experiences expected in security work scenarios. Data has revealed the sessions have proven four times faster with 75 percent knowledge retention, compared to typical training methods offering only 10 percent in retained information.

Corps Security also began using MoonHub’s 360-degree filming technologies in March at Here East, the former’s innovation and technology campus.

Feedback from officers had been “outstanding”, the security firm said in a statement, adding:

“The gamification involved in the VR training makes it really popular and we’ve demonstrated that officers retain their knowledge more with this type of training. Corps is very much leading the way with VR training in the security sector”

VR Training to Empower Future Workforces

The news comes amid several key findings in the immersive training industry, namely after Finnish tech giant Varjo reported in its latest eBook moving “even a part” of training to VR and XR platforms could “drastically” reduce costs up to 99 percent, as well as train for key scenarios to boost readiness.

Studies from Canadian VR education firm Motive.io found mining trainees in such modules could better prepare for hazards and behaviours “on and off the job site” by significantly boosting immediate and post-30-day knowledge retention rates, compared with traditional instructor-led training.

Firms such as Osso VR, King Crow Studios, Saab, Varjo, and Sense Arena have been training professionals with bespoke VR and mixed reality (MR) solutions, many with impressive results.
