US tech startup Wave is hosting a browser-based virtual reality (VR) concert experience with pop superstar Justin Bieber performing as a digital avatar for home audiences. The company is hosting the online event on November 18th to promote Bieber’s upcoming real-life ‘Justice World Tour.’

Wave provides a browser-based VR Metaverse platform for fans to connect, communicate, and send virtual emojis using a voice chat system.

Attendees with webcams can also view themselves on the virtual jumbotron during the free 45-minute show, and fans can register for the event on Wave’s website.

Wave for Virtual Concerts

The news comes after the Metaverse firm launched as a VR platform in 2016 as an immersive experience application for SteamVR and Oculus hardware, and later became a web-based service earlier this year.

In January, Adam Arrigo, CEO of Wave, announced his company would discontinue Wave VR on all digital storefronts.

Wave shuttered the project Google Inc shut down Google Poly, which was the backbone of the VR app, stating,

“Unfortunately, we built the user tools on top of Google Poly, which is shutting down. As much as we’d love to, we aren’t able to spend the resources to build a new backend pipeline”

Wave’s initial VR product showed massive potential as the application supported hours-long, multi-user raves, according to Arrigo, and featured photorealistic avatars, advanced interactivity, and 3D music visualisers for an immersive Metaverse experience.

The news comes after the Metaverse company partnered with popular video sharing platform TikTok to host a VR concert featuring pop icons The Weekend and Major Lazer.

By becoming a browser-based experience, Wave is now available to anyone with a laptop or smartphone and no longer requires a VR headset.

More XR Festivals

The announcement comes amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which saw many event organisers, stage performers, and festival goers turn to XR tech to host live events.

Australia’s ‘Splendour in the Grass’ summer music concert went digital after the Splendour team transformed the annual event into Splendour XR, an immersive VR experience.

Swedish hitmakers ABBA recently reached number 8 in the charts with a digital comeback tour and album that transformed the icons into realistic 3D avatars performing new and classical songs.

Finally, Los Angeles-based tech startup Stage, Inc debuted its own VR live events platform with integrated NFT and eCommerce functions to boost brand engagement, and where British rock band Muse held its ‘Enter The Simulation’ VR experience on the Stage 11 platform for free.
