Motion measurement firm Vicon has inked a series of contracts with Sandbox VR, one of the world’s top firms for location-based virtual reality (LBVR) services to open six fresh global locations.

The partnership comes as Vicon backed the 2019 launch of the Amber Sky 2088 experience, which leveraged Sandbox VR’s true free roam immersive experience.

Vicon’s cutting-edge LBVR technologies with low latency, real-time, and precise tracking solutions created a seamless gaming experience for launch attendees. Following the event, Sandbox VR has tapped Vicon’s solutions across its 26 global locations.

Sandbox VR is a major immersive entertainment firm for groups of six people, with locations across North America and a further in London’s Holborn legal district.

Inspired by Star Trek’s “Holodeck” platform, the venue recently earned $37 million in a Series B funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz late last year.

Steve Zhao, Sandbox VR’s Chief Executive, said in a statement that his company’s work with Vicon began “because we needed a true partner, not just a technology supplier.”

He continued, stating,

“The support we’ve had from Vicon over the last few years has been incredible, and we’re incredibly proud of the experiences that we have been able to create together”

Imogen Moorhouse, Chief Executive of Vicon, added that Sandbox VR was a “fantastic success story for [LBVR].”

He continued,

“The support for its expansion from both investors and consumers is both testament to the solidity of its business and a hugely encouraging signal for the entire LBVR market as we recover post-pandemic. The opening of the new North American and London locations is just the latest milestone, not just for Sandbox VR and Vicon, but for LBVR more generally as it grows into what is forecast to be a $20 billion market in the next five to six years”

The news comes after Vicon announced the launch of its Valkyrie motion capturing (mocap) system at the SIGGRAPH 2022 in July, which currently offers the world’s top specifications for LBVR motion capturing kit.

The enterprise’s Origin technology feature impressive automated calibration systems, strobeless 7-megapixel camera resolutions, and 380 frames each second, among others, and aims to reshape the mocap industry with its next-generation tracking tools.
