Samsung has revealed the first-ever headset code-named ‘Project Moohan’ for use on the new Android XR operating system.

Project Moohan will provide a “spatial canvas” for users to explore the world via Google Maps, watch sports on YouTube or plan holidays, and more.

Android XR is a new platform, which is the culmination of Samsung’s collaboration with industry leaders, such as Google and Qualcomm, leverages Google’s AI model Gemini to provide a conversational user interface and a contextual understanding of your surroundings.

Won-Joon Choi, EVP and Head of R&D, Mobile eXperience Business, commented on the impact that it believes these technologies could have on the XR industry: “XR has quickly shifted from a distant promise to a tangible reality.

“We believe it has the potential to unlock new and meaningful ways to interact with the world by truly resonating with your everyday lives, transcending physical boundaries.

“We are excited to collaborate with Google to reshape the future of XR, taking our first step towards it with Project Moohan.”

Android XR’s First Headset

Samsung explains in its related press release that its XR technology uses multimodal technology, supported by the Galaxy ecosystem and Google’s suite of apps to interact naturally and intuitively with the world, ultimately revolutionising your everyday lived experience.

Using its latest mixed reality (MR) headset, the technology allows users to transform their worlds instantaneously from the mountaintops of the Alps to the busy streets of New York City.

What’s more, they can be interacted with not only with a controller and gestures, but also through the use of voice and natural conversation, enhancing the overall experience.

From a design perspective The South Korean electronics manufacturer, Samsung, explains that the hardware is a lightweight and ergonomic designed for maximum comfort.

TechRadar describes the XR headset as a cross between Google’s Daydream VR headset and the Apple Vision Pro.

It also claims that a pair of Samsung smart glasses will be soon to follow.

The name ‘Moohan’ means infinity in Korean, which Samsung says alludes to its mission to deliver “unparalleled” immersive experiences.

Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem at Google, agrees that its partnership will lead to major changes in the space: “We are at an inflection point for the XR, where breakthroughs in multimodal AI enable natural and intuitive ways to use technology in your everyday life.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Samsung to build a new ecosystem with Android XR, transforming computing for everyone on next-generation devices like headsets, glasses and beyond.”

The Long-Awaited MR Headset

Google announced the collaboration with Samsung and subsequent launch of Android XR earlier this week, which it referred to as the “next generation of computing”.

Earlier this month, there had been reports that Samsung was planning to unveil some new augmented reality smart glasses in early 2025. That was according to the Korean news publication Yonhap News Agency, which said that the AR glasses will be showcased alongside its Samsung Galaxy S25 launch event Galaxy Unpacked.

Back in September, Qualcomm announced that it is designing AR smart glasses with Samsung and Google that can be powered by your smartphone.
