Global telecoms giant Qualcomm recently announced plans to significantly improve Wi-Fi standards by creating Wi-Fi 6/6E platforms and teasing Wi-Fi 7 criteria. The standards will improve the distribution of Metaverse and augmented reality (AR) content.

Wi-Fi 7 uses “extreme” data speeds to support multiple users across various devices in online environments, including the Metaverse.

Qualcomm promises Wi-Fi 7 will sustain low-latency performance for enterprise-grade extended reality (XR) content distribution, including advanced video conferencing, virtual workspaces, and Metaverse education applications. The tech firm will also support online XR gaming experiences with W-Fi 7.

The San Diego-based produces uses innovative technology such as antenna architectures, enhanced radio waveform efficiency, and mesh Wi-Fi networks to enable firms and individuals to onboard mobile devices like smartphones or XR headsets.

For Wi-Fi 6, Qualcomm employs tech like a 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and WPA3 security platform to enhance Wi-Fi expectations. Additionally, Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 6E further upgrades connectivity by integrating +6GHz operations and more than 160 MHz of processing power.

Wi-Fi 7 will also feature 4K Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), 320MHz bandwidth, and multi-link capabilities to establish the future of interconnectivity while debuting a “world-first” Wi-FI 7 device later this year.

The news comes after Qualcomm acquired Arriver, an automotive firm that develops self-driving technology, to supply it with the former’s smartphone processors and sensors.

Snapdragon Spaces

The news comes after Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon Spaces XR Developer Platform last year as a global ecosystem to create consumer and enterprise-level immersive applications.

Qualcomm partnered with Square Enix in February to create immersive XR experiences for its network of video game studios and recognisable brands. Square Enix collaborates with the device manufacturer on Snapdragon Spaces to create cutting edge immersive gaming content.

Conversely, Snapdragon Spaces enables global firms to create B2B and customer-facing XR solutions from companies such as TRIPP, Niantic, Meta, and many more. Snapdragon Spaces developers are currently designing solutions for verticals, including healthcare, wellness, education, and collaboration.

The news comes after T-Mobile partnered with Qualcomm in November last year to launch an Accelerator Spring Immersive Technology Programme to promote innovative XR startups such as Prisms of Reality, Condense Reality, Everysight, and Flow Immersive.
