Microsoft announced last week it plans to update its HoloLens 2 devices to Windows 11 to level its performance and standards.

According to the Redmond, Washington-based firm, it would test the update with Windows Insiders to release the optional feature at a later date. The release will upgrade the HoloLens 2 to the operating system’s 22621 build.

The updates will allow Windows 11 users to tap WebView2, a function to control web-based apps on Microsoft’s Edge browser. The new additions will also offer Dynamics 365 Guides with a significant improvement in annotations for Teams and HoloLens calls.

What Do the Upgrades Include?

Microsoft upgraded the Dynamics 365 Guides platform for remote and frontline workers last week. The fresh features include step-by-step instructions to streamline training and repair processes.

Microsoft incorporated Teams on the HoloLens 2 to boost collaboration for workers with live feeds and annotations. Remote guides could host face-to-face meetings with HoloLens 2 users to provide walkthroughs with direct inking, a spatially-orientated annotation system providing notes as virtual overlays.

Furthermore, it will receive a “Restricted Mode” for enhanced control over access to Windows 11-backed HoloLens 2 headsets.

Microsoft Mixed Reality, Mixed Reviews

The news comes amid a series of major setbacks for Microsoft after it eliminated most of its mixed reality teams. It also axed the development of its veteran metaverse platform AltSpaceVR, much to the bemusement of longstanding fans of the platform.

Microsoft also shuttered the development of its HoloLens 3 device amid ongoing turmoil on the future of its project. However, the firm vowed to continue working on its mixed reality toolkit (MRTK) for the veteran headset.

Robin Seiler, Company Vice President and COO of Windows and Devices Organisation, said at the time that the company remained dedicated to supporting both the HoloLens lineup and its MRTK.

He said in a statement.

“The intent of this note is to help provide clarity to this community on our commitment to HoloLens 2 and the broader Mixed Reality program”

Microsoft shed around 10,000 employees earlier this year, leading to fears it would no longer support the device.
