US tech giant Microsoft is updating its Mesh mixed reality (MR) platform for peer-to-peer collaboration by adding numerous improvements to the user interface (UI).
The August 2021 update released in September will improve MR navigation to massively streamline the platform for design teams and individuals.
Microsoft Hololens and Mesh inputs are based on handtracking technology, allowing a user to interact with UI elements without requiring a physical controller.
What’s New?
The update comes as Microsoft plans to launch its Hololens 3 headset for consumers and enterprises in 2024 at a drastically lower price to attract a larger customer base.
Microsoft also appears to be working on a user-friendly version of Microsoft Mesh, according to the company.
Microsoft’s Mesh collaborate suite with the latest August 2021 update comes with:
- Co-location: Allows multiple users in a real-world space to collaborate in a local digital space. Microsoft claims its new feature is “highly anticipated” and comes just as many businesses return to offices or adopt hybrid work models.
- New and Improved UI: Working from multiple years of research and development (R&D), Microsoft has introduced its ‘Smart-Menu’ UI, with improved icons, 3D assets, animations, and much more.
- New Brush Functionality: Microsoft is adding over 40 brushes to Mesh for designers to create 2D and 3D digital paintings and animations.
- Enhanced Audio Feedback: Alongside UI improvements, Microsoft has reworked its audio feedback with added notifications for inputs to create a satisfying and responsive Mesh experience.
Experimental Features
Additionally, Microsoft has added two experimental features:
- Eye Gaze Interaction: Microsoft will introduce eye tracking to the Mesh ecosystem, bringing new potential to the platform. Industrial repair and maintenance teams using the Hololens 2 can work hands-free to focus on repairs while navigating digital guides using eye-tracking technologies.
- Sticky Notes: Adds a simple but useful feature for Mesh users to create and place sticky notes in a shared MR enviroment.
These experimental features must be turn on in the settings menu as they are still in the testing phase, and are designed for avid users eager to test out the new capabilities.
