Today, Meta announced Quest+, a new subscription-based service that delivers two gaming titles to Quest 2 and Pro owners for roughly $7.99 per month. The move reflects a common trend in the gaming market, which sees service providers adopt subscription-based operations, and console manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft also offer subscriptions to increase a user’s digital application library.

The Menlo Park-based firm will debut the service on Monday, July 3, giving Quest owners access to Pixel Ripped 1995 and Pistol Whip. Additionally, in August, Meta will distribute Walkabout Mini Golf and Mothergunship: Forge to its subscribers.

Notably, the new service comes as the firm records significant losses from its Realtiy Labs XR division. Additionally, the firm underwent mass lay-offs in early 2023 to increase efficiency as the XR marketplace regained traction and competition.

Moreover, Meta is ramping up for the marketplace debut of the Quest 3 MR headset, with the firm promising further details at Connect 2023 to follow from its initial announcement. However, Meta outlined how Quest 3 users can play VR titles from legacy Quest devices, dramatically increasing the number of available services on the upcoming device. With Quest+, operators can increase the size of their content libraries before purchasing the firm’s latest device.

 More on Meta Quest 3

As stated, Meta is revealing more on its upcoming consumer-grade headset during Connect 2023 – a historically significant event for the Menlo Park-based firm.

Previously, Meta achieved mixed success with its enterprise-grade MR headset: the Meta Quest Pro. However, Meta is looking to buck that trend with its upcoming device, which promises to lead MR capabilities at a fraction of the Pro’s price.

During its announcement, Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, noted that the Quest 3 contains the following features:

  • Higher resolution
  • Stronger performance
  • “Breakthrough” Meta Reality technology
  • 40 percent slimmer, more comfortable form factor
  • Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon XR2+ chipset
  • 128 GB of storage
  • TruTouch haptics
  • Direct Touch hand tracking
  • Unity SDK compatibility
  • SnycReality AR content creation
  • $499.99 price point

Meta will release more information regarding the headset at its Connect 2023 on September 27. The announced date is weeks before its typical timeframe in October from previous events.
