Lightstorm Vision and Meta have formed a partnership, which sees mixed reality (MR) Meta Quest becoming Lightstorm’s exclusive hardware provider for 3D film and TV productions.

James Cameron, the much-acclaimed director of blockbuster films like Titanic, Terminator, and Avatar, is also the owner of Lightstorm Vision, a pioneering 3D technology and tools company, which it says is seeking to “revolutionise how we create and consume media”.

Supporting this vision, the partnership will work to scale the creation of “world-class” 3D entertainment across live sports and concerts, films, and TV series using the Meta Quest.

Cameron reacted to the company’s new technological partnership with Meta: “Fantastic news… Announcing a comprehensive, multi-year partnership with Meta to revolutionise ALL visual media.”

“Recently, Boz [Andrew Bosworth, Meta CTO and Head of Reality Labs] showed me some of Meta’s advanced tech.

“I was amazed by its transformational potential and power, and what it means for content creators globally.

“I’m convinced we’re at a true, historic inflection point. Navigating that future with Meta will ensure ALL of us have the tools to create, experience, and enjoy new and mind-blowing forms of media.”

‘The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship’

In the words of Rick from the classic 1943 film Casablanca, “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship”; as Lightstorm Vision and Meta look to make waves in the world of 3D experiences.

Casablanca being one film that Cameron has previously indicated he would like to recreate in 3D.

Variety magazine reported in December last year that Cameron had rereleased The Abyss, True Lies, and Aliens in 4K, with both Titanic and Avatar due to come out in 4K shortly after the article was written.

It comes as no surprise then that Cameron is seeking to take his audiences’ immersive experiences to the next level by “moving media forward” and enhancing the ability for content creators to leverage advanced tooling, including artificial intelligence.

As a member of Stability AI’s Board of Director’s, Meta believes that Cameron is well positioned to bring a responsible AI approach to the sector.

A press release by Meta announcing the partnership news also revealed what it is seeking to achieve through the collaboration: “Our goal is to make top-tier 3D content more accessible—both for creators to produce and for people to enjoy at home and on the go.

“Together with Lightstorm Vision, we’ll improve access to 3D production tools across the broader entertainment industry.

“In addition to co-producing original content, we’ll leverage Lightstorm Vision’s cutting-edge technology and production techniques to revolutionize the creation of stereoscopic media.”

Meta added that its collaboration will also help Lightsorm Vision to lower its production costs relating to 3D content creation.

Cameron and Lightstorm Vision have been attempting to progress 3D technology for over three decades, which has resulted in them becoming leading experts in stereoscopy, a technique used to form the illusion of depth by layering two slightly different images on top of one another.
