French mixed reality (MR) headset startup Lynx announced on Monday a Kickstarter crowd funding campaign to raise additional funds ahead of the February 2022 launch of its Lynx R-1 headset.

The kickstarter starts today at 19:00 CEST and the campaign’s success will help ensure a quick delivery of R-1 headsets to global customers.

The R-1’s MR capabilities mean both consumers and enterprises can use the headset for virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) applications.

The news comes after the French firm announced its headset would debut at roughly $1,500, but the Paris-based firm later reduced costs to $499 in a special Kickstarter offer.

Additionally, Lynx will offer additional models on its upcoming crowd funder, including a limited edition, transparent model for $699 and a pro-enterprise version for $899.

Lynx claims its R-1 product is the most “advanced standalone MR headset” and has powerful specifications to back the statement.

To power the upcoming headset, Lynx has employed Qualcomm’s popular Snapdragon XR2 chipset and Android’s version 10 operating system. The R-1 headset also integrates a 90° FOV with 1600 x 1600 pixel per eye resolution to create super high-resolution immersive 3D experiences.

Furthermore, the company is integrating hand tracking capabilities from Ultraleap and a 128GB storage capacity, rivalling the most recent Oculus Quest 2 model.

Despite Lynx’s low price tag, the startup is setting new standards as Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 presents fierce competition with a much more expensive costing $3,500.00, although the upcoming Hololens 3 is expected to release in 2024 with cheaper, consumer-grade hardware.
