Light field technologies are set to more than double from $76 million USD to $154 million in 2026, a new Research and Markets report has found.

The market research firm also found the light field market would expand at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.1 percent the same period.

According to the findings, key contributors included improved visual effects technologies in gaming and cinema, medical imaging, rising demand for prototyping, and customised marketing.

It added hardware would remain the largest sector of the forecast, with a rise in research and development (R&D) fuelling new solutions for virtual reality (VR) headsets and light field screens.

Software would also continue to contribute to the upward trend as demand increases for animation and visual effects (VFX) in media and entertainment.

Auto stereoscopy will also dominate the media and entertainment industries, which allow stereoscopic (3D) footage without the need for 3D glasses and is regularly used in VR/AR systems for 3D effects.

North America and the Light Field Market

The news comes as several reports have found the North American market also contributes the largest revenues to the light field market, namely as organisations deepen investment and R&D.

An Ecorys report on the VR market in April noted the US held a top position in the VR/AR market, with Silicon Valley tech giants such as Facebook, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and others leading the ranks.

According to the figures, the US had one of the most active VR/AR markets for venture capital funding and was the most willing region to invest in tech startups.

China is also a rising leader in the industry as companies such as DPVR, Pico Interactive, Nreal, and others make further inroads in the global technology market.
