Indian telecommunications and technologies innovators Jio trialled a 5G-enabled virtual reality (VR) experience that teased enterprises with a low-latency solution for virtual and video conferencing.

Jio ran the trial using its in-house 5G and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) networks, allowing engineers to test a multi-party HD immersive video call experience for global cross-platform users.

The trial offered a sneak peak on features such as screen and presentation sharing, interactable white-boards with real-time updates, real-time video playback, enhanced feedback, and the ability to record and upload meetings to the cloud.

In a statement on Linkedin, Aayush Bhatnagar, Senior Vice President at Jio Platforms, shared his excitement following the trial.

“This trial leveraged both eMBB and low latency capabilities of 5G to deliver the end user experience. It is truly exciting to experience the possibilities that come to life using 5G

The experiment in VR communications ran off the powerful 5G Core, a platform Jio recently deployed across India in 50 days.

Because of this, the World Communications Awards 2021 highlighted 5G Core, shortlisting Jio for an award in advancements of 5G implementation.

The Mumbai-based firm continues to push leading telecommunications solutions across India, namely after it successfully expanded mobile coverage across rural regions in July with an added 6.51 million wireless customers, totalling its mobile customer base to 443.21 million.

The Future Indian XR Development

The news comes as Jio plans to innovate and become national leaders in the field of mixed reality (MR) solutions.

Its subsidiary and India’s largest MR company, Jio Tesseract, unveiled a democratised developer platform earlier this year to boost the nation’s cross reality (XR) innovation and collaboration.

The platform supports JioGlass, a pair of MR smartglasses created to bring consumer and enterprise-focused hardware to the region.

JioGlass also supports the ‘Jio Mixed Reality SDK,’ a tool for XR developers to create new or port old immersive experiences for monetisation on its application store, marking a first for the subcontinent.

With developments in MR and 5G solutions, Jio is providing valuable tools to advance MR and XR development in India.
