Illuminarium is combining storytelling, architecture, and technology to bring mixed reality (MR) experiential attractions to the US this summer.
The Illuminarium attraction is walk-in exhibition where attendees are surrounded by massive 4K projections displayed on canvases measuring 350 by 22 feet.
Behind the first Illuminarium experience is the trusted New York production house RadicalMedia, which has worked with Oscar nominees to produce inspiring content for a variety of platforms.
RadicalMedia has filmed the first Illuminarium experience: an hour-long virtual safari trip taking place in an 8,000-square-foot room.
The experience takes advantage of multiple technologies such as 4K video, spatial sound, haptic flooring, interactive features such as ‘dust’ kicking up, and authentic scents to create an immersive experience.
Jon Kamen RadicalMedia CEO said: “I wanted to pursue something that is more of a communal experience. It’s VR without goggles.”
Illuminarium is working with key technology vendors to supply the attraction with the best in immersive technology.
German technology firm Holoplot is also using 3D audio-beamforming and wave field synthesis, which creates virtual sounds in real space, to supply the attraction with immersive spatial sound.
Ouster, an US provider of lidar sensor technologies for over 500 clients, is providing Illuminarium with ultrawide lidar sensors which react to each attendees movements and gestures.
Italian audio firm Powersoft designed the haptic floors to replicate realistic ground-shaking moments.
Illuminarium: Past, Present, and Future
Illuminarium landed $100 million in a first round of fundraising in June, with Eldridge Holdings providing a significant portion of capital.
Eldrige offers a massive user base and will provide a platform for the attraction with a portfolio of major media holdings such as Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.
Illuminarium is also teaming up with the Rockwell Group to help convert the site into a nightlife venue.
The Bar at Illuminarium offers an unrivaled dining experience with visualisations such as a Japanese night market, interstellar nebulas, or reefs below the ocean’s surface.
The Rockwell Group creates immersive experiences with their new “Lab” design studio and are using Illuminarium to showcase its work.
The attraction is set to open its first location in Atlanta on July 1, with a further Illuminarium site being built at AREA 15 in Las Vegas in autumn 2022.
