Last Friday, FIFA announced a series of blockchain, NFT collectables to promote the upcoming 2022 World Cup and Women’s World Cup events in Qatar.

Algorand is leading the FIFA+ campaign, launching in late September, giving avid fans access to “iconic” FIFA World Cup and Women’s World Cup moments, art, and imagery.

FIFA Chief Business Officer Romy Gai said football fans are engaging with the brand in “new and exciting” ways due to fandom changing, which the FIFA+ campaign reflects.

According to Gai, FIFA’s blockchain promotion democratizes “the ability to own a part of the FIFA World Cup.”

The exec compared the digital collectables to conventional sports memorabilia but added that FIFA+ presents a more accessible avenue for fans to connect to “players, moments and more on new platforms.”

An Accessible Promotion

Algorand is launching the FIFA+ blockchain campaign with a range of initial NFTs. The firm will release more exclusive and limited-edition collectables after the late September launch.

FIFA+ also provides a digital space for international football fans to connect over the sport. The platform offers unique digital experiences and updates focusing on the FIFA men’s and woman’s World Cup, including interactive games, news, and event information.

The democratized platform is launching in three languages, English, French, and Spanish, with more to come. Additionally, FIFA+ is easily accessible via desktop or mobile devices.

W Sean Ford, the Interim CEO of Algorand, explained that the partnership has secured FIFA with a “decentralized and scalable public blockchain.”

He added,

“The commitment FIFA has made to bridge to Web3 enabled by Algorand, is a testament to their innovative spirit and desire to directly and seamlessly engage with football fans around the world”

The news comes after global smart glasses vendor Nreal and Immersiv.io partnered to enhance the Premier League with augmented reality (AR) technology. The alliance gave at-home viewers an AR-ready live stream of the SuperCup 2022 with visualizations, including player stats and information.
