Cisco Systems has revealed its upcoming Webex Hologram hybrid work solution at the WebexOne event on Tuesday.

The company claimed the new platform was the only real-time meeting solution using augmented reality (AR) head-mounted displays to blend its meetings platform with real-time 3D holographic content.

The news comes as a report from the San Jose, California-based firm found 64 percent of workers said their ability to work from home affected the decision to stay or leave a company.

Based on the findings, Cisco urged organisations to provide greater flexibility in remote working arrangements while balancing the need to perform hands-on collaborations.

According to the firm, the Webex Hologram platform would allow collaborators to execute such tasks.

Jeetu Patel, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Cisco Security and Collaboration, said,

“Our mission at Cisco is to empower the 3 billion digital workers on the planet to participate equally from anywhere in the world. Webex Hologram represents a large step toward our mission of delivering a delivering a work experience so seamless that there is no gap between virtual and in-person collaboration”

The news comes as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to rock companies across the world, namely as countries plan national lockdowns and heighten security protocols to tackle the virus.

Webex Hologram could allow professionals in the medical sector such as physicians, technicians, and others to handle 3D content remotely to save time, travel costs, and most importantly, lives.

It will also offer users several key capabilities, including immersive technologies, digital and physical content sharing, and immersive experiences for multiple users for a headset-agnostic experience compatible with Microsoft HoloLens 2 and Magic Leap headsets.

Zak Brown, Chief Executive of McLaren Racing, said the new platform was a “powerful tool” for his firm’s design engineers, drivers, and crews to reimagine hybrid sports and support teams globally.

He continued, stating,

“Rather than flying a technician to the racing team or explaining procedures through flat images, with the Hologram technology we can immediately show an engine component from every angle, convey sizing, and instruct on assembly and usage as if they were in person – all while saving countless hours in travel time”

The news comes as MR solutions such as NexTech AR’s HoloX and Microsoft’s Mesh platforms aim to develop next-generation holographic content for VR, AR, and MR-enabled devices.

Finnish XR firm Varjo Technologies also unveiled a similar solution — Varjo Teleport — on Thursday last week at a long-awaited product launch, which will allow users with XR-3 headsets to enter 3D-scanned environments in a shared virtual space.
