China has kicked off the 2021 World Conference on the Virtual Reality (VR) Industry on Tuesday, Xinhua News reported.

The conference, which is taking place in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, will cover some of the nation’s top achievements in the virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) industry and promote use cases for the implementation and development of VR.

According to the website, VR is a “cross-border integration of many cutting-edge technologies” to expand human perception, products, and services.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with the Jiangxi provincial government and the HTC-backed Industry of Virtual Reality Alliance, will host the annual event, which has taken place in Nanchang since 2018.

The summit’s “integrated development, innovative applications” theme will gather over 2,000 experts, firms, and academics across the sector. Attendees can join the conference virtually or in-person to listen to speeches from over 260 speakers across 16 forums.

Key speakers at the event include Frank Meng, Chaiman of Qualcomm China, Liehong Liu, Chairman of China United Network Communications Group, Deborah Papiernik, Senior Vice President of Ubisoft, Wei Luo, Huawei Fellow and John Hennessy, US Turing Award Laurate and Academic of the National Academy of Engineering and Sciences, among others.

According to the report, the conference has inked nearly 321 projects valued at $30.3 billion USD (194.6 billion CNY) over the past three years.

The news comes as China also hosts the IEEE International Conference on Virtual Reality and Visualization (ICVRV 2021), which featured a 30,000-square-metre VR exhibition with more than 200 foreign and domestic groups invited to display product innovations across the industry.

2021 has been an energetic year for events in the global extended reality (XR) industry, with XR Today attending the VR/AR Association’s events in June and September, the SIGGRAPH 2021 annual conference in August, and Unity for Humanity annual summit on October 12.

Upcoming events such as the Industrial XR Forum 2021, the CoachTech Summit 2021, and Facebook Connect annual address are set to take place this month.
