Following the successes of its EOS VR system, Canon USA has joined the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 to demo its technologies with a novel immersive movie for attendees of the conference, it announced on Monday.

The ‘Limitless Is More’ show will showcase Canon’s extended reality (XR) imaging solutions to debut M Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin. The show aims to deepen communication, collaboration, and imagination for audiences.

Those attending the CES 2023 can view the movie from many viewpoints. Filmed at Canon’s Volumetric Video Studio in Kawasaki, Japan, the company will transport audiences to multiple perspectives of several characters.

Kazuto Ogawa, President and Chief Executive for Canon USA, said his company was “creating groundbreaking solutions” to help people connect. The unprecedented solution would also redefine how people “work and live [when many] are embracing a hybrid lifestyle.”

He added,

“Canon’s ultimate role is to bring people closer together by revealing endless opportunities for creators. Under our theme of ‘Limitless Is More,’ we will show CES 2023 attendees what we are creating as a company focused on innovation and a world without limits”

Kyosei Principle for Immersive Filmmaking

This comes as Canon practices its Kyosei principle for its products. Kyosei aims to connect “all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture” harmoniously.

Canon’s immersive movie debut will also allow the company to contribute to positive impacts on humanity.

The company’s Kokomo software will also aim to change human communications using virtual reality (VR) along with immersive calling experiences.

It will connect people via compatible VR headsets and smartphones to provide real-time 3D (RT3D), photorealistic communication for users.

Free Viewpoints Video System

Canon’s Free Viewpoints video system offers major facilities such as stadiums, studios, and arenas with over 100 Canon Cinema EOS cameras and lens systems. Users of the groundbreaking system can capture data from the interlinked system to produce 3D replicas of objects from nearly all angles.

Sports facilities for the National Basketball Association (NBA) have leveraged Canon’s EOS VR technologies for broadcasts, replays, and virtual advertising.

Canon has deployed the system at the Rocket Mortgage Field House and the Brooklyn-based Barclays Center for the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Jets, respectively.

Canon will also debut its MREAL mixed reality (MR) experience for visualising and simulating lifelike images with photorealistic colours. With utility across industries, Canon’s MREAL system will immerse viewers in movie action for immersive entertainment.

Finally, Canon USA’s Activate My Line of Sight (AMLOS) will provide official support for hybrid team meetings. The solution’s high-tech pan, tilt, and zoom (PTZ) features also facilitates attendees joining immersive meetings, both in person and remotely.  Such technologies have permitted teams to collaborate on group investigations from events in the Knock at the Cabin demo.

The immersive filmmaking solution has earned a prestigious CES 2023 Innovation Award for Best of Innovation.
