US tech giant Apple Inc quietly announced on Monday it is seeking new professionals to boost its augmented and virtual reality framework, indicating a push to innovate its extended reality (XR) plans.

Hayden Lee, AR/VR Software Engineering Manager for Apple, announced the news on Twitter, stating the company was seeking an engineer “with a focus on multi-user systems” who wanted to “make a big impact on the next generation of computing platforms.”

According to the job description, Apple’s Technology Development Group is searching for an engineer to boost the “capabilities and performance of AR/VR systems” for systems and applications, which included “machine learning, computer vision, and multimedia processing.”

The company added applicants should feel comfortable “exploring an uncharted and constantly evolving domain,” which involved research and development (R&D) and prototyping “without sacrificing code quality or attention to detail.”

The new position would also require work with Apple user interface (UI) frameworks to “think outside-the-box, and solve incredibly ambitious and interesting problems in the AR/VR space.”

Apple’s job posting hopes to attract fresh talent capable of meeting the Cupertino-based firm’s ambitions to lead the industry in specific consumer and enterprise-level XR solutions.

Apple’s Upcoming XR Headset

Apple’s efforts to step up its XR capabilities come amid the expected launch of its mixed reality headset in the fourth quarter next year. Ming Chi Kuo, Veteran Analyst of Apple, updated the industry on the device’s alleged release date along with key upgrades to its hardware capacity.

The new device has reportedly shifted to a standalone headset rather than one requiring tethering to Apple laptops, mobiles, or tablets to offload processing power. The sleek head-mounted display will also host an M1 chip for unrivalled processing power and WiFi connectivity up to 6, 6E, and 7.

The company’s XR targets have been set amid fierce competition from rivals such as Meta, HTC, Microsoft, and many others aiming to design the Metaverse via their proprietary solutions.
