News reports have surfaced on Monday that Apple Inc filed a trademark for its RealityOS operating system for its mixed reality (MR) headset, following social media comments from industry professionals.

Parker Ortolani, Consumer Products Manager for The Verge, 9to5 Mac, Buzzfeed and others, tweeted on late Sunday that it could not “be a coincidence” the realityOS trademark was “owned by a company that seemingly doesn’t exist.”

The company behind the filing, Realityo Systems LLC, submitted its own trademark on 8 December last year, stating it was specifically for “peripherals,” “software,” and “wearable computer hardware.”

The most recent application aimed to submit Apple’s realityOS trademark globally with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on June 8th, the tweet added.

Ortolani noted additional coincidences, namely that Apple filed the trademark just two days after hosting its Worldwide Developers Conference keynote in early June.

Progress Check on Apple’s Headset

The news comes just weeks after Apple teased its latest head-mounted display (HMD) to its board of members along with Chief Executive Tim Cook, and further reports revealed the device is expected to launch in late 2022 or early 2023.

The latter details were found in a Bloomberg report, which noted the Cupertino-based firm’s iOS beta source code had numerous references to the headset. The report added the headset would likely launch at the iOS’s 16 cycle from June to autumn 2023, at the release of iOS 17.

Apple has pushed for multiple patents to secure technologies for its MR headset, which will add air conditioning units, human-computer interfaces (HCIs), and other upgrades.

The device will also feature numerous specs such as a 4K microLED display, support for WiFi 6, 6E, and 7, an M1 processor, and standalone functionality, according to reports.

The long-awaited headset comes after months of delays due to several quality control issues linked to overheating, software development concerns, and others, veteran Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed in recent months.
