Nividia Moving to the Metaverse
Nvidia has revealed major updates to its metaverse platform during the ‘Graphics, AI, and the Emergence of Shared Worlds‘ presentation at the online SIGGRAPH 2021 event this week.
In an Gamesbeat interview, Richard Kerris, Vice-President of Omniverse Development at Nvidia, said the platform will host “exchanges, market economics, and other things in the virtual world.”
Kerris also explaining how the platform would unite brands, digital design engineers, and enterprises, adding the Omniverse would be the “connector of these worlds.”
But the firm added it would like to port its massive Blender user base over to the Omniverse to benefit designers as roughly 500 companies have already invested in the platform, according to reports.
Kerris continued, explaining ,
“With over 3 million users of Blender out there, free and open source 3D software packages are really gaining momentum at an unprecedented rate. We’re thrilled that we’re going to be able to bring this platform and our technologies to this growing community that’s out there”
The news comes as Metaverse platforms such as Virbela and Spatial have increased in popularity, proving the value of the metaverse by enhancing personal and enterprise remote communications.
Despite this, Nvidia designed the Omniverse specifically for enterprises and engineers, offering both a virtual environment to work by themselves or with others.
What is Nvidia’s Omniverse?
Nvidia’s ‘Omniverse’ is a metaverse platform, or shared online space, where virtual reality (VR) users can collaborate and communicate, and the US technology giant is updating the Omniverse to include official support of its ‘Blender’ and ‘Adobe Substance’ 3D rendering tools.
Users can now access the tools via the Omniverse and Nvidia is keen to see designers create additional ones for the Metaverse platform.
Blender has held a steady reputation as a mainstay in 3D design software as the application is free and over 20 years old, making it a recognised brand.
Conversely, Adobe Substance is early in its lifespan but has become available on the Creative Cloud, which has a strong install base of 22 million paid members.
The news comes amid fierce competition from rival firms such as Nextech and Facebook, who have joined the new “virtual space race” to build the Metaverse.
