The extended reality (XR) industry continues to build its technological renaissance by developing fresh virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) solutions. The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona, Spain, provided a premier backdrop for the immersive and emerging technologies industry.

Numerous firms showcased their latest creations amid the event, which took place from 27 February to 2 March. Many revealed new use cases for XR technologies, impressive virtual worlds, and upcoming enterprise solutions.

NTT DOCOMO Trials 6G XR Use Cases at MWC 2023

At the MWC 2023, NTT DOCOMO debuted multiple 6G, open radio access network (ORAN), and XR use cases for its telecom solutions.

Japan’s largest telecommunications company allowed attendees to test 6G robotics, haptics, and metaverse technologies to demonstrate the emerging technology’s potential.

The news comes as global telecoms, including Nokia, Huawei, Ericsson, and others scale up their network capacities to accommodate enterprise and consumer-level demand from XR devices. These technologies will require edge and cloud computing, green, and low-latency networks to deliver their services.

GIGXR Debuts Immersive HoloScenarios: BLS Training

GigXR, an immersive healthcare training platform, launched updates for its HoloScenarios platform. The upgrades include fresh additions to its Basic Life Support (BLS) training modules

Last Thursday, immersive healthcare training solutions provider GigXR updated its HoloSecnarios platform to include new training models to deepen learning curves.

The award-winning platform featured partners from Morlen Health, a subsidiary of Northwest Permanente. According to an executive from the company, the partnership would allow its medical group to provide XR training globally to boost learner and instructor accessibility.

Metaphysic Appoints Sam Head to Top Gen AI Role

XR generative artificial intelligence (AI) firm Metaphysic announced last week it had onboarded Sam Head as the company’s Senior AI Model Artist along with three key executives.

The four executives have created de-ageing and real-time 3D (RT3D) solutions for Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and developed the ABBA: Voyage, The Book of Boba Fett, and other immersive experiences.

Metaphysic’s appointments come as the company engages with advertising, entertainment, and other industries to expand its solutions. Such tools and technologies have remained in increasing demand for programmes, including America’s Got Talent, one of the world’s most widely-viewed television programmes.

Varjo, Finnish National Opera and Ballet Debut Immersive Opera

Premium XR headset provider Varjo Technologies partnered with Finland’s National Opera and Ballet (FNOB) to launch a first-ever immersive opera event.

The Turandot performance debuted in late January and featured works from classical composers Giacomo Puccini and Franco Alfano. Varjo teamed up with the FNOB and Sweden’s Malmö Opera to co-produce the event.

Attendees could view the show in real-life up to 4 March and virtually up to 16 February, and the concert was met with praise and acclaim from global media.

Headless LMS to Power XR Learning, CoSo Cloud Says

CoSo Cloud and The Unconventional, two major immersive learning platform suppliers for the United States Department of Defense, discussed their latest cloud-based solution with XR Today in an exclusive interview.

The headless learning management system (LMS) provides a secure, agile, and interoperable platform for distributing learning modules on nearly all devices. The company also explored the potential to integrate its offering on XR headsets and devices for expanded immersive learning training.

Numerous US government institutions, military staff, and administrators leverage the company’s platform for their learning needs, namely for language and cultural instruction. Personnel and staff from major Fortune 500 firms, including Apple, Google, Raytheon, and others, also use it to upskill for their daily operations.

Qualcomm Announces New Partners at MWC 2023

Qualcomm Technologies, the worlds leading developer of mobile components and XR device processing units, announced at the MWC 2023 it had onboarded several key partners for its Snapdragon Spaces platform.

The company’s XR Snapdragon Spaces XR Development Platform has taken on new firms to expand the number of Snapdragon Spaces solutions across XR devices, leading to wider availability.

It also revealed to MWC attendees that major companies such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Lenovo, OnePlus, and others had expanded Snapdragon Spaces adoption at the event. Xiaomi’s Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition smart glasses featured Qualcomm’s XR2 platform, leading to expanded support and impressive AR spectacles for consumers.

Morpheus Launches Turnkey VR Enterprise Solution

Morpheus, a new VR collaborative platform, revealed its solution aimed at boosting employee engagement. The all-in-one platform provides Meta Quest 2 headsets, immersive environments, and presentation tools for social gatherings in the Metaverse.

The company aims to accommodate enterprises with healthier corporate cultures, minimise Zoom fatigue, and future-proof business operations. To date, Morpheus has served multiple Fortune 2000 firms with high-fidelity virtual spaces across headsets, smartphones, PCs, and laptops.
