Xiaomi, a major Chinese tech manufacturer of devices such as smartphones, computers, laptops, and smartwatches, received authorisation for a patented pair of magnetic augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, Pandaily reported on Friday.

According to the report, the AR smart glasses will include compartmentalised magnetic mounting parts, allowing components of the device to detach for greater portability.

The news comes after the Beijing, China-based tech firm experimented with a novel version of its Xiaomi Smart Glasses in September last year.

The specs featured microLED optical waveguide technology, a 51-gramme form factor, apps for navigation, calls, photos, and real-time translation, 497 microsensors, and tetherless operations.

The news follows competition from numerous rival Chinese firms, including Nreal, ByteDance, Tencent, Huawei Technologies, Alibaba, and TCL, who have launched their own metaverse devices and solutions in a bid to increase the number of available extended reality (XR) solutions in the mainland, as well as built a domestic ecosystem capable of competing with global market leaders.

The report added that a spokesperson from Xiaomi said it would outline its plans for contributing to building the Metaverse, the future spatial communications platform set to succeed the Internet.

It would monitor metaverse products for future designs and would prepare funding and materials to build future devices such as smartphones, displays, and other technologies, the report said.
