On Wednesday, Vuzix, a global manufacturer of enterprise augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, revealed it had signed numerous agreements with extended reality (XR) components firm Atomistic SAS.
The deal will secure Vuzix with “next-generation” micro light-emitting diode (microLED) lens display technologies for its upcoming immersive devices. Atomistic designed its lenses as the world’s first microLED product supporting fully integrated colour displays for AR devices.
The strategic agreement provides Vuzix with an exclusive license to use microLED lenses for its smart glasses, and Atomistic SAS will assist Vuzix in designing custom backplates for its AR products.
Vuzix will also acquire the French components manufacturer if the agreement leads to successful technical developments for its devices.
The partnership enables Atomistic to deploy its experimental microLED displays globally and accelerate the hardware amidst competition in the immersive display marketplace from alternative solutions from Vuereal or Porotech.
Additionally, Paul Travers, President and CEO of Vuzix, said that based on the project’s success, the firm would bring microLED displays to market for third parties.
The CEO added,
“In the future, μLED displays coupled with Vuzix advanced high-volume waveguides will be offered globally to third-party OEMs for use in their AR glasses”
What are microLED Displays
Currently, many XR component manufacturers are developing unique microLED display technology. Atomistic aims to stand out in a busy marketplace with a new microLED-based hardware solution.
Atomistic’s full-colour product delivers high-quality brightness and efficiency for a low cost, so smart glasses manufacturers can develop practical yet ergonomic devices.
Atomistic designed the innovative product specifically for AR devices, meaning the component accommodates high-volume expectations for AR production cycles, and the partnership enables the firm to accelerate the production and deployment of its microLED components.
The Principal Founders of Atomistic, Jonathan Sachs, PhD and Jerry Woodall, PhD, said,
“Having the insights of the Vuzix team will be invaluable to help ensure the system level solution hits the mark for product. We are very excited to be part of this effort with Vuzix as a partner”
Additionally, researchers at Vuzix and Atomistic will collaborate on delivering an advanced wafer solution that optimises Vuzix brand devices for microLED and other third-party AR LED displays.
