Recently, Osso VR launched its Healthcare XR training service for the Apple Vision Pro. The new application leverages the spatial computing platform to create detailed and “clinically accurate” training workflows of standard medical procedures.
According to the firm, “Osso Health” leverages Vision Pro to expand the audience reach of its immersive learning product via the Apple userbase. Moreover, the Vision Pro service allows medical learners to interact with Osso VR’s immersive learning procedures with the device’s integrated hand-tracking, eye-tracking, and voice control.
Justin Barad, MD, the Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Osso VR, added:
Osso Health for Apple Vision Pro opens up exciting possibilities for the future of immersive procedural education. Apple Vision Pro unlocks new opportunities to scale spatial computing in healthcare with groundbreaking display quality and virtually lag-free learning experience, helping solve important challenges to education in healthcare.
The firm also states that Vision Pro democratises access to procedural immersive education. Osso Health simulates medical training workflows to suit two standard orthopaedic procedure use cases, such as carpal tunnel release and total knee replacement.
Osso VR provides a solution that helps surgical professionals train before surgeries in real-life operating rooms. This solution removes traditional educational models’ obstacles, such as travel, scheduling, and collaborative hurdles.
Surgeons can train repeatedly with customized modules to improve their efficacy, skills, and data retention. The solution also offers vital instructional tools, enables performance monitoring, and provides feedback to the surgeons.
Osso VR has partnered with major medical firms, including Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer Biomet, Stryker, and Smith + Nephew, in various surgical specialities such as cardiology, spinal, and general surgery.
Vision Pro Becomes a Serious Workplace Tool
The Apple Vision Pro and the influx of enterprise and productivity-focused applications to help boost the emerging product into various workplace environments are expiring.
In the healthcare space, two surgeons used the Vision Pro at Cromwell’s private hospital as a “surgical logistics and organisational tool” in March, according to spatial computing healthcare firm eXeX.
The Vision Pro is available in the US, but Apple has yet to reveal when it will be launched in other regions. Mr Syed Aftab, Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon, said: “Working with eXeX to use the Apple Vision Pro has made a huge difference to how we deliver care to our patients. It’s a real privilege to be the first team in the UK and Europe to use this software within surgery, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this technology advances and the impact it can have across hospitals in the UK.”
Kate Bovell, Chief Operating Officer at Cromwell Hospital, also said:
At Cromwell Hospital, we are committed to innovation and improving how healthcare is delivered to benefit all patients, whether it is through harnessing robotic or AI technology or using the latest, evidence-based approaches to deliver care.
Moreover, Apple is billing its Vision Pro product as a tremendous opportunity for businesses to reimagine what’s possible at work. The device is still very much in its early days; however, as it attempts to gain recognition, Apple is firmly placing the Vision Pro in notable workplace situations to translate the value of spatial data for business.
The article discusses Apple’s recent efforts to integrate smartphones and tablets into enterprise environments, focusing on commercializing and scaling 3D data. Apple is also working to support typical workplace applications and enhance the 3D workflow for service providers and customers.
Microsoft also supports an immersive version of its 365 suite on the Vision Pro, including popular productivity apps like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams. Additionally, the device features Co-Pilot, an emerging genAI solution that allows users to multitask on 365 apps, and ChatGPT, an alternative genAI solution for Vision Pro.
More on Osso VR
Earlier this year, Osso VR expanded its medical training library to include orthopaedic surgery specialities by introducing five new modules to its training platform. The modules present hyper-realistic content across various subspecialty areas, granting trainees access to an expansive orthopaedic virtual reality training library with over 30 modules.
Osso suggests the addition of the diagnostic knee arthroscopy model stands out among the new five for incorporating “Illustrative View”, an innovative assessment tool available in both the immersive operative suite and on the Osso Analytics web platform. This feature enables users to visualize their performance, enhancing their comprehension of anatomic understanding.
Barad stated at the time:
Osso’s mission is to democratize access to surgical training around the world. The launch of Osso Academy and subsequent expansion is an example of the investments we’re making to ensure that our upcoming generation of surgeons have access to immersive training and objective assessment, giving them the tools and confidence they need to deliver consistently optimal care for their patients.
Osso VR offers a Premium Content Library that includes various modules for surgical professionals’ virtual reality training. The library covers many speciality areas, such as foot and ankle, arthroplasty, hand, trauma, sports, and spine. The arthroscopy module is one of the library’s five orthopaedic procedures, including supracondylar humerus fracture and carpal tunnel release. Osso VR recently added bi-malleolar ankle and femoral neck fractures to the library’s content.
Every module in the Premium Content Library is designed to align with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Milestone and Case Minimum requirements. This alignment complements the existing training curricula and allows surgeons to undergo repetitive training with customized modules, enhancing their efficacy, skills, and data retention. The virtual reality training approach eliminates challenges inherent in traditional educational models, such as travel constraints, scheduling issues, and collaborative obstacles.
Participants can monitor their performance and receive valuable feedback through essential instructional tools incorporated into the training. Osso VR’s solution plays a proactive role in training surgical professionals, providing a preparatory step before they engage in real-life surgeries in operating rooms.
In August 2023, Osso VR introduced hand-tracking input options called “Hand Control” before the debut of Vision Pro content. The feature allows users to navigate and interact with immersive training scenarios without a controller, increasing immersion and empowering healthcare professionals to participate in training scenarios with heightened realism.
Osso VR’s platform promotes the creation of custom virtual reality learning content, and the company assists healthcare firms with XR scalability and delivery.
