American telecommunications firm Verizon and the National Football League (NFL) have entered a 10+ year contract, allowing Verizon to integrate 5G-enabled augmented reality (AR) solutions at NFL stadiums.

Previously, the NFL worked with Verizon to integrate 5G into this years Superbowl LV, but the expanded contract will enable the NFL to explore practical use cases for 5G-enabled AR such as assessing concessions, crowd management, and public safety.

In a statement to Fierce Wireless, Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg revealed just how quickly it’s 5G solution is expanding, stating that the longstanding relationship led to the “swift delivery of 5G connectivity in 90% of [NFL] stadiums.”

Verizon’s 5G mission will bring value to various elements of an NFL event, Vestberg continues:

As we embark on the next 10 years, our work with the NFL will continue to enhance and transform not only the fan viewing experience, but also has the potential to improve player training and overall venue operations.

Verizon’s stadium coverage reimagines live events, by enhancing fan engagement with low-latency interactive AR games, live player stats, and high-quality graphics.

High-profile NFL team the Carolina Panthers went viral this month, as the team’s mascot was brought to life with 5G/AR technology.

Ultra Wideband a New 5G Infrastructure

The extended 5G partnership follows on from the Super Bowl LV event, whereby Verizon, NFL, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) collaborated to provide stadium attendees with an interactive AR video game.

Currently, the New-York based firm has implemented it’s 5G technology in over 60 sporting and entertainment venues across the states.

Recently, Verizon invested $80 million ahead of Super Bowl LV, enhancing the 5G infrastructure surrounding the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

The infrastructure supports Verizon’s new ‘Ultra Wideband,’ a 5G network that empowers attendees who can enjoy a instant mobile webAR experiences.

Ultra Wideband from Verizon creates 5G stadium coverage by installing miles of fiber-optics, distributed antenna systems (DAS), and 281 small cell antennas.

According to the American communications firm, Verizon’s 5G network will reduce latency and help AR applications respond more quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, 5G developments in Florida have brought vastly improved coverage to the residents in the surrounding downtown Tampa, Ybor City, and Riverwalk areas.
