TikTok has revealed it is testing a beta version of developer tools to help content creators design augmented reality (AR) effects, TechCrunch reported on Monday.

The report found TikTok’s Effect Studio was currently under development in private beta mode, adding the tools were an “experiment” and may potentially never be released as a full version.

Despite not including much information about the new experiment, TikTok Effect House’s webpage asks those with interest in the project to provide information to remain informed about its progress.

A TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch:

“We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience. Currently, we’re experimenting with ways to give creators additional tools to bring their creative ideas to life for the TikTok community”

The news comes as Facebook and Snap have begun developing AR developer tools for camera effects aimed at boosting audience engagement and developer collaboration.

Numerous firms have entered the AR industry amid rising competition for revenue streams generated by customer engagement, advertising, the metaverse, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Facebook recently opened its Passthrough API Experimental, included with its v31 update, to developers and testers to allow users to synchonise mixed reality (MR) content with real-world environments.

Apple also included massive features in its Reality Kit 2 software development kit (SDK) for advanced scene capturing, motion tracking, and image processing for use with the iPhone 12’s LiDAR scanner.
