On Monday, Snap Inc, the parent company behind the popular social media platform Snapchat, showcased its upcoming augmented reality (AR) Spectacles to a selected number of creators and influencers.

During a hands-on report by MailOnline, a demo at Snap’s London headquarters showcased various hardware and software details of the AR solution.

New Hardware, Software

According to the Daily Mail, Snap’s new head-mounted device (HMD) contains dual 3D waveguide displays, which offer a greater level of flexibility with its lightweight design when compared to other immersive display technologies.

The Spectacles contain a 26.3-degree field of view (FOV) that places AR visualisations directly into a user’s retina. Other augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) devices contain many FOV expectations, including the Lenovo ThinkReality A3’s 40-degree FOV, Varjo XR-3’s 115-degree FOV, and the HoloLens 2’s 52-degree FOV.

Snap Spectacles include dual stereo speakers to create spatial audio experiences that significantly increase user immersion and are a standalone product that does not require tethering to external computing devices such as a phone. Furthermore, Snap’s mobile device only weighs 134 grammes, making it perfect for outdoor usage, including social and sporting experiences.

On the software side, Snap showed off immersive experiences that envision the future of immersive entertainment. Featured experiences include Magic Forest and Solar System initiative applications.

Speaking to the MailOnline, Snap said,

“We’ve offered the new Spectacles to a select group of creators around the world to learn alongside us and push the boundaries of AR”

Snap Inc has not confirmed a release window for its Spectacles, but according to the online report, the firm notes that spatial computing devices will replace smartphones in the following “five to ten years.”

The news comes after Snap is set to host its Partner Summit on April 28, which gathers representatives from the firm to discuss its hardware and software ambitions.

Snap Inc, From Social to Immersive Media

Snap Inc is also famed for creating successful immersive media campaigns, studios, software, and hardware. The social media firm is expanding from its popular Snapchat application, which is already an excellent opportunity for AR immersive advertising campaigns via its Snap Lens platform.

Also, AR developers are already creating prototype experiences for the Spectacles smart glasses using the Snap Lens Studio platform, where they can build engaging AR use cases and campaigns along with brands via Snaps Arcadia Studio with the latter’s enterprise-grade workshops and trend reporting.

Last month, Snap also bought the human-computer interface startup NextMind to develop more accessible hands-free interactions for computing devices, including extended reality (XR) solutions.
