Manufacturers of immersive industry 4.0 solutions RealWear launched a hands-free, voice-controlled thermal camera attachment for its Navigator 500 augmented reality (AR) headset.

The new add-on allows Navigator 500 operators to capture high-resolution visible-spectrum, thermal, and colour images. This feature enables a RealWear worker to identify temperature anomalies in industrial equipment like pumps, pipes, wiring, and motors.

The RealWear Navigator 500 add-on allows frontline workers to view real-time thermal imagery. In the future, RealWear operators will also be able to send recordings of their thermal camera-ready video feed via integrated workplaces applications like Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Webex Expert on Demand.

Rama Oruganti, the Chief Product Officer at RealWear, added,

“The compelling option to add thermal image capture [to the Navigator 500] without occupying your hands in hazardous environments gives frontline professionals more real-time information to do their jobs safely and productively”

The new technology integration enables RealWear clients from various verticals such as construction, industrial, and automotive workplaces to leverage new technology to meet on-site targets.

RealWear client representative Greg Cooper, an Innovation Engineer for Manufacturing at American Honda Motor Company, noted how his team could use Navigator 500 devices with thermal imagery to address airlocks and ventilation leaks.

Additionally, he added that the updated device gives Honda’s reliability team added confidence when reviewing engines to ensure a product meets internal quality standards.

Integrating Teledyne FLIR

RealWear also integrates the Teledyne FLIR ecosystem, which lets workers store, transmit, and download purpose-built thermal JPEGs. A workforce can perform in-depth analysis and reports using the FLIR Thermal Studio, a post-processing software.

Additionally, Oruganti said,

“By combining Teledyne Flir’s thermal expertise with RealWear’s best-in-class voice-driven wearables through its Thermal by FLIR program, we’re creating a digital tool with extended capabilities for the modern frontline worker”

The firm explains that with a thermal attachment, Navigator 500 devices can work in many industry use cases, notably in electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC inspections. Additionally, Oruganti said that RealWear’s long-term vision of immersive assistive technology takes shape as company clients start using new data capture methods like thermal imaging, storing that information in the cloud “and beyond.”

He also added,

“Industrial wearables have a huge role to play going forward in industry 4.0, and we’re proud to be a part of the global movement”

In a statement, Dan Jarvis, Sr. Director of Business Development Teledyne FLIR, explained that thermal imaging is critical to assembly, effective condition monitoring, and predictive maintenance programs.

The RealWear Navigator 500 is the only hands-free industry 4.0 product that integrates the patented MSX technology – a high-speed thermal imaging software. The integrated technology combines details from a live video feed with thermal image enhancements that enable frontline workers to access and share critical operational information.

RealWear to Become a Platform Solution Firm

In August, RealWear refocused its company goals with the debut of its Cloud software-as-a-service (SaaS) product, enabling frontline industrial workforces to manage fleets of AR wearables from a unified application.

RealWear Cloud is a digital dashboard containing tools that enable on-site managers to track and oversee deployed immersive devices. Additionally, the service provides streamlined access to device updates, real-time data, and third-party applications, including Microsoft Endpoint Manager – that RealWear integrated into its product portfolio last year; alongside Teams integration.

The firm also debuted Cloud Assistance, which gives frontline workers access to real-time remote technical and troubleshooting support. Cloud Assistance helps businesses face ongoing talent shortages by reducing device downtime, increasing productivity, and providing a secure dashboard for a company to scale fleets of RealWear AR devices.
