Digital transformation provider Matterport announced on Friday a strategic partnership with French virtual reality (VR) solutions developer Retail VR to enhance immersive, consumer-facing retail and eCommerce solutions.

The partnership with Retail VR enables Matterport to dramatically decrease the cost and time required for brands wanting to implement digital twin solutions.

Adrien Zanelli, Co-Founder and Head of International Business Development for Retail VR, said that “retailers must adapt with innovative, virtual shopping experiences.”

He continued, adding,

“Combining Matterport’s digital twins with our virtual and augmented reality platform will continue to unlock new efficiencies and cost savings for our clients, while also helping them meet their customers’ expectations for an immersive, online shopping experience”

According to figures released by Matterport, digital twin solutions can assist retail brands by increasing traffic to virtual showrooms by 10 percent.

Additionally, the figures suggest that its digital twin solution can greatly reduce carbon emissions by roughly 1,200 tonnes.

Retail VR

The French VR firm is using immersive technology to boost retail and eCommerce campaigns for global brands such as Nespresso, WD-40, and Kenzo.

Retail VR’s diverse lineup of in-person and digital solutions cover a wide variety of brand and consumer-facing use cases.

Instore Activation by Retail VR enables shoppers to place 3D models of in-store products before they buy. Shoppers can access this augmented reality (AR) visualisation via their smartphone cameras to overlay AR content directly in a shoppers point of sale (POS).

By using powerful digital twin solutions, Retail VR provides shoppers with high-quality digital scans of physical stores. Retail chains can access VR-powered digital twins of brick-and-mortar shops to test floorplans, shelf layouts, or simulate customer walkthroughs.

Also, Retail VR is developing a comprehensive virtual showroom experience that offers a variety of consumer-facing benefits such as digital walkthroughs, product try-ons, immersive product info panels, and direct customer support.

Additionally, the immersive technology firm offers tools to assist retailers to manage eCommerce and immersive extended reality (XR) campaigns.

Matterport

Spatial data company Matterport is working hard to create accurate digital twins of physical buildings and spaces, and has already captured interiors from across the world for its Habitat-Matterport 3D Research Dataset (HM3D) a library of digital twins.

Last year, Matterport entered a partnership with Meta’s AI division to expand its digital twin solution across the US to provide industrial benefits such as decreasing facility management costs by up to 50 percent.

The Matterport-Meta partnership will “help change the way we work and live” by assisting the Menlo Park-based firm in creating AR-powered digital assistants.

The joint effort uses Matterport’s advanced object recognition software to allow Meta’s AI assistants to recognise everyday objects and perform tasks with greater speed and accuracy.

The news comes after Meta announced it would step up solutions for facilitating consumer AR devices, including Project Nazare, an AR wearable that allows the user to communicate with others and take part in social immersive experiences.

During the Meta Connect event 2021, Meta teased audiences with its AR-powered virtual assistant programme set to launch with the upcoming head-mounted device.

Building solutions and ecosystems for consumers will allow such devices to offer instant access to Metaverses for retailers, similar to plans announced by retailing behemoth Walmart in January.
