Dutch smart glass lens manufacturer Luxexcel has teamed up with Swiss lensmaker Optiswiss AG, one of Europe’s biggest opthalmic laboratories, it was announced last week.

The partnership will see Luxexcel’s 3D lens solutions work with Optiswiss to boost production for the smart glasses market, with the former implementing its VisionPlatform 7 at the latter’s plant in Basel.

The new solution will provide Optiswiss with a platform to print several of its 3D prescription lenses for AR-powered smart glasses and offer further support for the Swiss firm’s future smart eyewear product launches.

Optiswiss selected Luxexcel’s VisionPlatform 7 due to their “high-quality” lenses and streamlined production process, which has been simplified to a one-step process compared to typical manufacturing.

Samuel Frei, Chief Executive Officer at Optiswiss, said he was excited about the joint venture, adding,

“After several years of cooperation with Luxexcel, it was time for us to bring the new VisionPlatform 7 to our production plant. We now have a digital manufacturing platform to combine prescription lenses with smart technology today, including a clear path towards large volume manufacturing of prescription smart glasses”

The partnership would allow Optiswiss to develop new solutions and “bring them to market quickly” to give customers an “edge over the competition,” he concluded.

Fabio Esposito, Chief Executive at Luxexcel, added,

“We found a partner in Optiswiss that shares our vision to be at the forefront of innovation in the smart eyewear industry. The combination of our technology and the experience of Optiswiss as a lens manufacturer ensures that smart eyewear producers can bring to market smart devices that addresses the needs of those with prescriptions”

The announcement comes after Luxexcel launched the platform in mid-July, where it would print lenses, waveguides, holographic optical elements, and other components for businesses and clients.

Luxexcel announced a similar industry partnership with Snap-owned WaveOptics, who was acquired for $500 million USD, or the largest deal for the AR firm.
